Default Door Molding Removal

Wassup!?!

I'm new to the board. I have a 5th gen that I've been working on and I'm wondering how to take the black molding off the doors. The molding I'm referring to is the ugly flat black stuff that runs vertically. It appears to be crimped on. I've got pretty much everything else ripped apart on the car.

Here's some pictures if you want to see my progress...

I'm just shaving a few things and fixing some rust. :naughty:

Thanks,
Anthony

I think you take off the door panels inside the car and there should be clips on the door once the panels off. I heard they're a pain to get out, but it's the only way. Most people I've talked to said they had to replace the clips holding them in. I'm not sure if I'm right, but I hope I helped some. Good luck with all that work.

he's referring to the vertical black plastic panels, not the horizontal door side moldings.

The horizontal side moldings underneath each window weren't too bad once I got the hang of it. If you pry up on the molding you can see two tabs on each plastic clip. If you work a tiny screwdriver underneath the tabs, the plastic clip will pop out of the molding. Of course I put a tiny dent in one of the moldings before I got this down to a science...

The horizontal molding that ran across the top of the door came off a lot easier but I broke a few plastic clips.

Anyone know of a place where I can buy some plastic clips for cheap?

so you were able to get the lower chrome window trim off under the windows? Just pry up a little, and theres tabs on those little red clips? I saw the red clips under there, just didnt know how they worked... How can u pry up enough to get to the tabs? Will a chop stick work?
haha

Yeah I got everything off the driver's side last night. It was a real beee-otch. First thing I'd do is wrap a rag around a screwdriver so it doesn't mess up the paint on the door. Since I am repainting I didn't care about a few more scratches. There are red clips on the ends of the molding but they pull out pretty easily. There are several white clips about 6" apart along the length of the molding. Use a the screwdriver with the rag to pry up on the molding and peak under till you find the first white clip. You can pry up quite a bit. I was able to put a lot of pressure on the clips and none of them broke. Once you find a white clip, shove your chopstick up in there and then use a smaller screwdriver to pop the white clip out of the molding. You have to be really careful about scratching the paint of the door though. Putting some tape down might not be a bad idea. The Haynes manual recommends this for removing other items. For the most part though the directions in the Haynes manual blow!

when i was trying to remove that chrome trim below the windows... the moldings felt like they could just slide off... because there was about an inch of play back and fourth, but the end caps got in the way.... Ill take a look at your method later on today.

thanks

To answer my original question...

On the front doors, put the window the whole way down and remove the weather stripping. Underneath the weather stripping you'll find 3 countersunk screws. Take those screws out and the flat black trim comes right off.

On the back doors, start by taking the inside door panels out. Next lower the window till you can see the two bolts holding the window in place. Take those bolts out so the window slides freely. Pull out the weather stripping and slowly pull the window up and away from the car. You may have to wiggle it back and forth to get it out of the track. Once the window is popped out of the track it'll pull right out. Pull out the weather stripping completely and you'll find 3 silver countersunk screws again. Take those screws out and the trim will come right off. Note that the windows have to come out because you can't put them the whole way down to get to the lower two screws.
