You won't hurt an auto by shifting it, unless you're driving it hard. Another reason manuals get decent mpg is less drivetrain slippage.

How do you know? From all accounts of people who've actually done it, the tranny life is dramatically decreased. It's more stressful on the tranny to just be 'rammed' into gear than it is for it to pick it's own shift point based on the conditions and input.

u can shift from d4 to d3 without pushing the button but from d3 to 2 you need 2 push it b/c it is locked same with 2 to 1.

how old is the car? routeine maintanence done? how many miles?
it might have misfired or it might have nothing to do with the engine. get the codes checked and get back 2 us
2000, accord v6, 110k miles it had a tune up sometime this summer.

when i downshift from d3 to 2 to 1, it isn't locked at all, unless i'm at a stop. if i'm driving i can move it freely, which was what i have been doing.

so all i have to do is walk into autozone and ask for a free code reading? okie dokie

or thefact that in order to get the auto to downshift, you have to step on the gas as opposed to blippin the throttle and shifting down to match the revs smoothly and perfectly.

True...I think it would be harder on the tranny for the downshift. Either way its an auto and drive it like an auto.

If you drive it conservatively (not drag racing) I don't see the problem, unless Honda trannies are junk, that is. I did it on American cars for years. If they weren't intended to be used manually at least once in while, then the shifter would only have P-R-N-D on it. Of course it wouldn't make sense to drive it that way everyday. What would be the point?

I have a manual, so I always shift anyway

Lower gears such as L/1 and 2 were put there for towing and other low gear situations such as getting stuck in the snow or mud.....if the car just had D R P N and you tried towing something in just D and not a low gear...your clutches would be shot in no time....Drive it like an auto...or get a manual i learned how to drive a 5 spd on my own..and im still on the original clutch.
