Default 95 Accord EX with Failed Emmissions

95 Accord EX 4-dr 4-cyl
199K+
State: GA

I took my Accord in for an Emmissions Test yesterday; and it failed for the first time in its history.

25/25 Test: NO ppm is supposed to be 945 or less, mine read 1505
50/15 Test: CO % is supposed to be .76 or less, mine read .88

Everything else passed well within the limits.

The guys at the service station were saying that most likely it was the EGR valve, etc. That after so many miles they would get clogged with carbon and no longer release like they were supposed to, etc. They also said something about being able to drill a hole into the EGR, clean out the carbon, and then plug back up the hole.

Do these failures seem EGR-related? If not, what it is? If it is the EGR, then how much effort/money can I look to put into the fix?

Thanks in advance.

Based on this, I think the issue probably IS the EGR.

Can anyone confirm?

How much does this EGR cleaning service run usually?

I guess I was mainly wanting to confirm if the emmission failures pointed to the EGR??? Thanks, guys.

I've replaced my O2 sensor in recent past. But I suppose the cat. could be an issue at this point too.

Anyone have the process for cleaning the EGR on a 95 EX 4 cyl? I noticed there were some instructions posted for other models but not the 95.

OK. So, evidently it's the EGR ports I need to scrub out. Can anyone confirm the process for me?

I first need to get the fuel rail out of the way. Then, I take off the top cover next. There appears to be 5 holes (EGR ports) down in there that I need to get the carbon out of.

Is that right? Am I missing anything? Is there any gaskets I need to plan on replacing while I'm in there?

Thanks.

Default egr port cleaning

its pretty easy I did mine last yr just removed fuel rail. You should releive pressure by loosening one of the fuel lines. Then just take the bolts off the rail pop the rail loose (have some vaseline handy for to lube the orings when you go back together (or you can replace the orings on the fuel injectors if you like I didnt though) then if i remember correctly you take some more bolts loose and there is a cover on the intake that will let you gain access to the wholes. I beleive the gasket is reusuable as i reused mine. I then got a coat hanger and some carb cleaner spray (dont let it get in your eyes burns bad) I let then started scraping and spraying till i got the ports cleaned. Then reassembled everything. I remember doing the egr ports on a 92or93 and that was harder as you have to drill out cup plugs.
