Good. Tell ya what. Go out and crank your engine up after it's sat up for 3 days, and immediately push the throttle to the floor and count to 20.

Abusing the engine is a completely meaningless phrase, because it can mean so many different things. 98Coupe says he beats the shit out of his car on a daily basis. But I bet he doesn't mash the gas pedal as soon as it fires.

Once the oil is circulating at full temperature, I don't consider WOT runs to the redline as abusive. But 2/3 throttle at 4000 rpm immediately after a cold startup in january, I consider that to be very abusive.

anyone have any idea on how much cheaper it would be in 300K miles to use mobile1 or just use regular oil and buy a new engine... esp when mobile1 here is 5-6 dollars/quart?

Hi all,

I was just reading a manual for an older BMW, the manual is quite remarkable in its detail and insight...Anyway in it they recommend starting your car and driving straight away in a normal manner. The reason for this is to get the engine temperature up to the correct range as soon as possible. Although it is an older car, i think BMW are a respectable source of information.

Just my opinion....
Cheers,
Michael.

along those same lines... exactly how much longer is your engine supposed to last by using synthetic oil? after reading everyone's comments here i feel slightly ashamed to say ive never used synthetic oil in my car. its about to hit 216k miles in the next week or two but i've never had any engine problems whatsoever.

also, would it be worth it to start using synthetic oil at this point?

Yeah, I believe BMW recommends this for all of their cars. My manual says the same thing and I'm happy to oblige, especially on cold days.
