im thinking you might have to consider time into the equation. meaning you'll cover more distance when 80mph vs 50mph, allowing you to travel further on about the same amount of fuel...? this is just my own personal guess. not sure if its technically accurate. :P

I think I remember reading an auto magazine like back in high school where the authors tried to get the best MPG...and they found the best was had by acclerating up to speed, then coasting down to like 5, accelerating again, etc. Something like that...but it's a fuzzy memory at best.
That's called 'tap and go'. A bunch of nerds got 100MPG in some Prius' by doing that. It especially works in our cars if you accelerate to 80 then coast down to 40 because our injectors shut off while the throttle is closed above 1100 RPM.

I guess for some reason the J30A1 is super efficient at any RPM point below the VTEC crossover.

But going 80mph doesn't use "the same amount of fuel" as going 50mph.

Good to know I didn't dream that up on my own.

One trip from NYC to Syracuse I got 30.5 MPG doing between 75-90 the whole way behind fast traffic and I hit 135 on an empty downhill stretch...that was weird
I've noticed the same thing. I used to go a consistent 75 on the highway and once managed 36.8mpg round-trip with some use of the AC and a couple patches of traffic. Now I keep it below 70 trying to save fuel but now I'm between 35-36mpg highway. It's strange because drag forces go up with the square of your velocity.

One explanation I've heard is that engines make power more efficiently as RPMs increase (up to a point). So it takes more energy to move the car at 75 than 65 but the engine makes up for it by getting more energy out of each ml of fuel injected. I couldn't even begin to explain why that happens but I can't think of any other way that mileage would improve as velocity increases. Maybe it's as simple as VTEC crossover changing valve lift which would reduce pumping losses? Maybe I should get one of those embarrassing ricer VTEC lights and test it out.

VTEC engagement on the F23 and J30A1 is at a fixed RPM point and doesn't change regardless of throttle position or conditions. It's as simple as looking down at your tach

For me to be cruising in VTEC in 4th gear I have to be doing around 105.

With highway traveling, I usually get somewhere around 340 miles on a tank and that's about empty for all practical purposes.
