I think I remember reading an auto magazine like back in high school where the authors tried to get the best MPG...and they found the best was had by acclerating up to speed, then coasting down to like 5, accelerating again, etc. Something like that...but it's a fuzzy memory at best.
That's called 'tap and go'. A bunch of nerds got 100MPG in some Prius' by doing that. It especially works in our cars if you accelerate to 80 then coast down to 40 because our injectors shut off while the throttle is closed above 1100 RPM.

I guess for some reason the J30A1 is super efficient at any RPM point below the VTEC crossover.
