But going 80mph doesn't use "the same amount of fuel" as going 50mph.

That's called 'tap and go'. A bunch of nerds got 100MPG in some Prius' by doing that. It especially works in our cars if you accelerate to 80 then coast down to 40 because our injectors shut off while the throttle is closed above 1100 RPM.
I guess for some reason the J30A1 is super efficient at any RPM point below the VTEC crossover.
