Just the other day my nephew takes his 'Stang to the strip to run, and some guy there encouraged him to try shifting w/o the clutch to get better times. He did it, and went home with a trashed trans. The bottom line is if your racing and can afford to swap the trans. often, go for it. Otherwise, use the clutch.

If done correctly, the shifts ARE much quicker. But this is not a race car and not very well designed for this type of use. Even motorcycles which ARE designed for that purpose... will still wear out much faster without using a clutch. I wore out he tranny on my last motorcyle doing this repeatedly at he racetrack at 30,000 miles... which is equivalent to around 90000 miles in a car.

lol my friend used to do this for a few weeks in her B2200 pickup before she could get the money to fix the clutch. It was only for 3rd-4th-5th though, nothing else. Sounds nifty (the rev matching), anyway. One of the few girls I know that can do this.

So there is some logic to shifting without the clutch. I don't understand why people that have a street setup would try it but at least there is a reason why its done. I'll stick with the clutch still.
