Is this what we are supposed to do everytime we replace the fluid or is just the process to follow if we have used Dexron as a temporary replacement?

I have just been draining the old fluid, cleaning the drain bolt magnet, replacing the crush washer and then refilling with new fluid every 20,000-25,000 miles, rather than the 120K miles as suggested on the maintenance schedule.
if you want a complete flush, do as the manual says. i personally think its a little too much to do every 20-25,000 miles. i say just drain 3 quarts and fill since you do this that often, no need to drain/refill 3 times. you can tell by the color of the fluid if you need a flush it all out.

Buster 133 thanks for the info on the PVC Wow I never would have looked there for it.

Did change my rear disks tonight went to ceramics. Some drag on the rotors about 25K on the pads. The last time I let them go all the way to the sensor it they had 56K on them.

ya, just fill the transmission up with 3 quarts, drive for 30 mins or so, drain and refill again. you could do it one more time if your tranny fluid needs it. you can tell by when you check the dip stick and wipe if off if you need to do it more. if the fluid in the transmission fluid looks like new by the second time you do it, i would stop there. remember to replace the crush washer, also the more often you do this, the longer your transmission will last.

Instead of filling it and doing it for 3 times - why not just use powerflush?

powerflush would probably kill the tranny with that many miles. That's why no shop will give a warranty on powerfulsh on a tranny with 100K+

honda does not recommend this as far as i know(i have heard from other members on this board and that is why the owners manual decribes the drain/refill method). that tansmission is very sensitive, i know that this model year has many issues with the automatic transmission, so just as a precaution don't power flush. as long as you drain/refill it should be fine. if you do it often, every 20-25,000 miles like buster133 does, there should not be a need for power flush.

btw, on a whole honda auto transmissions suck as far a reliablility when they age because some owners do not service them properly(change fluid enough).

Default transmission

I (knock on wood) have never had any trouble with automatic transmissions on Honda's. My first Honda, a 89 Accord LXi, which had been in the family since day one, as a hand me down car, made it through 3 different owners and a total of 7 different drivers with a total of 192,578 miles on the clock. I took ownership in 2000/133,000 miles, and until that point the transmission fluid had never been touched, I had a time trying to loosen the bolt, but I changed the fluid once a year and I had no problems. We'd still have the car, but we didn't need it so it was traded in. Then we had a 96 Accord EX with no transmission problems, and now we have a 99 Accord and a 02 Accord with so far, no transmission problems and I hope it stays that way.

Agreed, I had the transmission replaced on my 99 EX V6 after like 55K. Funny thing about was after having the car looked at for the transmission problem the tech said to chnage the fluid (drain, fill, drive, repeat 3 times).

When the transmission was dead they said I voided my warranty by replacing the fluid myself. When I showed them the receipt for the fluids and told them the tech ensured me this would help they realized they were caught. All maintenance was done by Honda with the exception of this routine protective measure.

All in all I have a new transmission with 10K on it that still doesn't feel strong.

Never again will I buy an automatic Honda.

I change my auto tranny fluid every other oil change. It only takes 2.5 quarts. It comes out to like $6 to change the tranny fluid. Not really a big deal. The biggest deal is putting the washer back on the bolt and making sure you get the bolt completely clean.

I don't recommend trickshift. Honda auto trannies don't take well to additives and different kinds of fluid. I'm sure the trickshift would just make it shift harder, but you can achieve that by just using cheap dexron 3. Stick with the honda atf fluid. The honda fluid has a special additive for honda trannies. If you don't use honda fluid, you are supposed to add lube guard as an additive to make up for it.

OK Did the deed and it went really well. Did buy the Honda fluid my dealer gets $3.59/qt. Added 3.1 and took it for a ride and in the upper part of the window. Some debris on the bolt but always had some on my Pacific Coast even with Mobile 1 and managed to put 35K on that. We'll see how the trans holds up.

Thanks for all the help,

Joe
