Transmission fluid DIY
Looking to change my fluid now that my 02 v6 has just broke 100K. Found the bolt to drain and add the fluid it looks very easy to do. My question is how much to add? What type? I see they have synthetic fluid on the shelf at the auto store or should I stick to Honda brand.
Any help would be great!
PS where is the pvc valve? Does it have one?

DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE BESIDES HONDA ATF FLUID.
You will run into many problems. Stick with Honda. I take about 4 quarts to fill it up.
I would just buy maybe 5 quarts and after each one you fill in just measure it.
You'll probably have one or two left over.
Its better to be safe than sorry.
for the PVC valve im not sure.

As flyromeo3 said, I wouldn't use anything but Honda Honda ATF. The PCV valve is located on the back, near the rear three spark plugs. Here's a DIY from another Honda forum.

If you just drain your trans fluid you will leave at least 40% of old contaminated fluid in. The best thing is to use "power-flush" machine (pushes old fluid with new fluid under pressuer).
Also, on all my cars I change trans fluid ever 20,000 miles. I am surprised you waited until 100k. Lack of fluid maintenance is the most common cause of transmission failure.
Just my 2 cents.....

Am I wrong?
it's not really "oil pan in tranny" but I was thinking it didnt have one either. I have a 5th gen.
I wanted to get some POVs on something. I was thinking about switching my tranny fluid again and I was going to go and get trickshift. Pros and Cons? If I do, should I go all trickshift, or should I mix? Or should I stay away from trickshift for a daily driver? Thanks

there is not a transmission pan to be removed. the drain plug has a magnet on it to collect the metal particles. also, don't power flush, its not recommend on these transmissions. best thing is to drain, fill up with new fluid, drive, drain, and fill, and so on. this dilutes the old fluid that sits in the rest of the transmission and torque converter. should only have to do it like 2 times so get extra fluid.
Hey thanks for the info. So get honda fluid about 6 qts and drain and redrain. 3 qts per drain? Approx.
Buster 133 thanks for the info on the PVC Wow I never would have looked there for it.
Did change my rear disks tonight went to ceramics. Some drag on the rotors about 25K on the pads. The last time I let them go all the way to the sensor it they had 56K on them.

I read this in the owners manual:
Always use Honda ATF-Z1 (Automatic
Transmission Fluid). If it is
not available, you may use a
DEXRON transmission fluid as a temporary
replacement. However, continued
use can affect shift quality. Have
the transmission drained and
refilled with Honda ATF- Z1
as soon as it is convenient.
To thoroughly flush the transmission,
the technician should drain and refill
it with Honda ATF-Z1 (Automatic
Transmission Fluid), then drive
the vehicle a short distance. Do this
three times. Then drain and refill
the transmission a final time.
Is this what we are supposed to do everytime we replace the fluid or is just the process to follow if we have used Dexron as a temporary replacement?
I have just been draining the old fluid, cleaning the drain bolt magnet, replacing the crush washer and then refilling with new fluid every 20,000-25,000 miles, rather than the 120K miles as suggested on the maintenance schedule.
