I love the new Synthetic 0w-30 (20's) for the winter months they really help cold weather starts.

5w-30 gives about .25 MPG better MPG then the 5w-50, if I romped the engine really hard I'd use 50w but I don't think a near stock Accord needs the 50w.

I may switch to 5w-20 in the summer now that Castrol makes this grade to get even better MPG. If the 01's use this grade why not the 2000's? It's the same engine?

I have yet to determine what the TSX will get, it states to use 5w-30?

Lower weight oils will give better mileage. That's why never cars recommend 5W30, 5W-20 or 0W30.

Protection is equal at operating temperature so long as the oil doesn't overheat.
Right, I was thinking backwards h:

Chad, here's what my 98-02 4 banger service manual says;

for 98-00 models:
10W-30 when driving in climates from 20-100+
5W-30 when driving in climates from -20-100+

for 01-02 models:
5w-20 for the whole range

I have no idea why it would possibly change :dunno: Maybe Honda was doing it for MPG and emissions reasons? My 98-99 V6 manual has the same temp ranges as the 4 banger manual does for 98-00 4 cylinders. Does anyone know what the 00-02 V6 manual says to use for oil?

Yes it's 5w-20 for the 2002 V6, my sister has the sedan That's how I know about the 5w-20....it even says in her car to never use 5w-30 for any reason and too change it out at the next service immediately if you do so?

Thats fawking crazy...the only major change to the engine was the change to the ignition system, but I can't see that affecting the oil required. Screw Honda...I'm sticking with my 30.

They did the same thing with the CL & TL Type-S engines. The engines from 2001 to 2002 were exactly the same, but in 2002 they started recommending 5w-20.

The reason for this is simple, and it's not for our protection. The thinner oil helps raise Honda's Fleet CAFE MPG stats a miniscule amount. With the increased sale of SUV's, Minivan's, etc, They are looking for every little percentage point they can get when it comes to Fleet MPG. On my 2002 TL-S, I ran 0w-30 in the winter, and 5w-30 in the summer.

Was there any EPA MPG rise when they changed oil? Does it really make that big of a difference? I'd imagine it couldnt possibly change it more than 1 MPG, ans that certainly isn't worth sacrificing protection for.

I was at the Honda-Acura dealer today to get new wiper inserts for our TSX and I noticed Hondas new rec. oil chart...they now recommend 5w-20 for ALL Hondas (exc. hybrids). Even prior 98+ cars say to use 5w-20.

Hybrids get 0w-20 or 0w-30, wow they say it is expensive too.

I think I'll stick with cheap and easy to find 5w-30's

I usually get about 35mpg on a run. That's from an '95 auto 2.3 using 98 octane fuel (Shell Optimax).

this has to do with gas mileage how? I'll stop being a smart ass. I take my car to a local place...easier that way.
