A check engine light is not a maintenance required light.
If it comes on,.. something is wrong. It may or may not be a big thing, but you should check it out before you reset it.
Most probably it's a sensor. Jump the terminals behind the glove box, and see how many times the light blinks. Then open your manual, and see what the code means.

personally i usually reset the CEL a time or two before reading the code to ensure that it isn't an erronious error.
also.. best way is to yank the ECU fuse. disconnecting the battery terminal is for people who can't read teh cover on a fuse panel

just pull the fuse under the hood , same thing as leaving the neg off your battery. you will have to reset your clock/stereo. I recently went to honda and got my ecm read it cost $40.00

Anyway, one of the most common causes for a CEL is a loose gas cap. Tighten it up, reset it, and then see if it comes back. If it does, then have the code looked up and addressed.
