Default Quick Racing Question

I had my first race last night and I spanked a LANCER. He had a manual I had an auto so I dropped it into 1st and then would shift up every 5000 rpms which really made me move. I guess my question is how bad is this for my transmission or is it ok as long as I dont redline it and keep shifting up at a acceptable rpm level.

The way I understand it you did:

1) Drop in 1st gear
2) Hold brake as hard as possible while not touching gas (i.e. idle RPM levels)
3) At flag or green light release brake+punch gas
4) Shift at 5000RPM (I don't know what your redline is)

That's pretty ok, it's no worse than punching it in D4 and letting the computer rev you to 5K everytime. Don't worry about it.

I think by "manually" shifting your auto transmission, if done in excess, will significantly reduce the life of your transmission. Automatic transmissions shift automatically for a reason, not because they are the best of both worlds between an auto and a manual.

That'd be Honda's 5 spd "SportShift" eh? ::laugh:: It's pretty decent, had a friend in a base RSX with one, I enjoyed it.

in a sixth gen I found 6k rpm to be the best place to shift, but I have a manual. with 6.5 redline. I read u should shift around 10% under redline.

I have a rental corolla right now and I keep using the shift lever. Its fast as shit compared to civics I drove and its fun at times to torture the auto tranny. If I hold the brake in all the way and punch the gas, thenrelease the brake it will squeal the tires funny thing is when I "shift" to second at 6k it will rev to almost 7k and boumce the rev limiter before engaging 2nd. Probably not good for the car but who cares.

Yeah those regular lancers arent really nothing to brag about. I just put new 17" with Kuhmo Ecstas on and an R33 body kit on so I wonder if the added traction along with a possible weight drop helped. Dunno

Traction always helps when racing. The beter you grip, the quicker you actually start! As for your tranny question, I've heard that if you do it for a prolonged amount of time that it can be pretty harsh on your tranny. Thought about doing a manual conversion in the near future maybe?
