The way I understand it you did:
1) Drop in 1st gear
2) Hold brake as hard as possible while not touching gas (i.e. idle RPM levels)
3) At flag or green light release brake+punch gas
4) Shift at 5000RPM (I don't know what your redline is)
That's pretty ok, it's no worse than punching it in D4 and letting the computer rev you to 5K everytime. Don't worry about it.
