Jim
That was a great post. We just bought a 99 Civic that just came up with the P1457 code. Can you tell me where you got the troubleshooting proceedure for the Accord? Looks like this one may be hard to diagnose. I don't know a lot about the EVAP canister & the related system but I know where the basic parts are and have a basic understanding. I have all of the troubleshooting tools and abilities. It looks like there is a vent hose connected to a small canister that is connected to the big canister. This engine was detailed before we bought it and I'm wondering if water could have gotten in there and block the vent? Possible? Thanks -

Got that out of my Helm repair book. There's detailed procedures for the whole pile of other Pnnnn error codes, too. Easily worth the $70 or whatever, if you're going to work on anything complicated.

Order one here...

Or maybe(?) a dealer might have them.

Thanks for the tip - Did you find the proceedure in their Repair Manual or one of the specialty manuals? Buying the book is a great idea. I have the knowledge and all the tools to do the testing my self, and at $100 per hour at the dealership, it's well worth the cost.

Thanks

PS - I replaced the Vent Valve on top of the Charcoal Canister because I saw several posts saying that was a common error. Worked for 3 days, but the light came back on this morning. The posts talk about a CVS - Would that be the Vent valve I replaced?

Yeah, that was in the main Accord repair manual from Helm. I don't have the elect. troubleshooting manual.

I had that code, it was the vent-shut valve for me. It's on the outboard end of the EVAP canister. I'm not sure what the CVS is?? (But a civic isn't the same as an accord anyway...)

When I was waiting for the valve to show up, the CEL would stay out for several engine-start cycles. I guess this code doesn't register unless it's bad when you start the engine, several times in a row. So the valve you changed might not have been bad. (Did you test it?)

Yep, I tested it. It's located in the top of the Charcoal Canister. It is normally open so I energized it and pulled a vacuum on it and it held a 16-18 inches. I figured it was good, but so was everything else I tested. Because I had read so many posts that this valve was bad, (at least I thought it was this valve), I replaced it. I thought that maybe it should hold 25 inches, but the new one held the same. At that point, I couldn't return and hoped it was an intermittent problem - not the case.

Your description of the Accord sounds a lot different than the Civic, so I guess I will have to wait for the book to arrive, unless someone comes through with the complete troubleshooting sequence. Thanks again.

Default '99 Civic EX sedan 5-speed doing it also

My wifes '99 Civic EX, 49 state legal, 5-speed triped this code three days ago. I lubed the fuel cap and cleared it. It went away for a few days now has returned. On the Civic there are two valves I can find under the hood purge on intake and Vent shut valve on canister which in in the engien bay of the '99 Civic. Is the 2 way-valve under the car in the 49 state '99 Civic EX also? My guess would be if it is the new Hampshire salt might have affected it.

I had p1457 and I couldn't for the life of me figure it out and then looked at the PCV valve and found the hose off the grommet. Put it back in and no more code.
