Questions about Manual Transmissions
Hey there, as some of you probably know I just got my 04 Accord Coupe 6-speed 2 weeks ago, and this is only my second car with a manual transmission.
My question relates to skipping gears. My old Civic was stock and not very fast, so I needed all 5 gears to accelerate. However, the Accord has so much power, that even rowing through the gears, by the time I get to 5th gear, Im already doing over 40. If I shift any faster, its like shift shift shift shift all right away.
So the other day I started practing starting from a stop in 2nd, and then going straight to 4th without ever using 1 or 3. It seems to work well, I dont have the shift much, and the engine makes enough power to pull through those gears, but I wanted to know if this was somehow bad for the transmission or the engine?
Thanks for taking the time to listen to my noob question!

You can really shift any way you'd like. Just make sure you are smooth so you don't tear up the clutch. You'll actually save fuel doing this as well. Sounds like you've gotten aquainted with the torque curve of this car, eh? Especially when going from a 4 cylinder. I drove the Accord six speed and was in awe at the low end torque of the 3.0L.

You're not kidding. As I said before, I have NO problem starting the car from a stop in 2nd. Hell, if Im on the highway cruising about 60-70 and I'm in 6th, I can pass someone without ever downshifting!!!

You have a car that runs 11's and you are surprised by this?
It won't hurt a thing as long as you don't over rev. or constantly dump the clutch. When I had my Civic, even with as little h.p. as it had (dx), I could easily skip third gear if I wound the rpm up enough, (i.e. 2nd to 4th) That's not racing though, just driving aggressively.
I skipped gears from time to time for the heck of it, and my clutch went 150k miles. Ya know, I haven't tried that with my Accord yet...hmm.
