Look for a EF Si that's running. REX or Civic. Yeah $4 K . Not a lot. I paid like $3,300 for my B16 swap like 4 yrs ago.

Holy ripoff!

But, yeah, that's actually a good idea. 88-91 Civic/CRX Si is lighter and smaller, and likely cheaper. It'll be harder to find than an EG, however.

Even an Si would still need minimum koni yellows with custom GC, different sway bar setups and all the bushings. That coupled with pads and other misc. you are tallied up to 7k.
Yeah, I think you're right. When you think about it, it adds up pretty quickly.

Gettheledout, if the goal is just to get involved in racing/motorsport, autocross is the cheapest way to do it. Class requirements reward getting a decent stocker and doing only minimal modifications. If you and your dad are looking for some wrench time together, don't worry, there will be plenty of minor stuff and maintenance with any old autocross junker. That's my $.02

The price for swap included a custom short ram intake instead of installing a stock intake that comes with swap. I already had DC headers from my previous sorry so called LS motor swap.

So which racing are you definately looking at doing since you're aware of $$. I think youd like a EF . Yes EG's are alot easier to find. EG Si vs EF Si you'd definately spend more. I think a EF CRX SI w/ a B16 swap or B18C1 GSR(USDM) would be nasty. Of course you'd come out alot cheaper than I did 4 yrs ago doing it yourself. If I knew how to do a swap I would've did a B18C GSR w/ LSD instead of my B16. I have no complaints but, of course more torque doesn't hurt.

cage, shocks springs, good brakes, good tires, and a stock/mildly built b-series. no need for some uber-crazy setup for a beginner. get your racing license and go from there. spirited street driving doesnt cut it once you have been on a track

And when you're done spending $7k on a eg hatch+boosted D16 setup, be sure to keep an eye in your rear-view and make room on the track for that $500 '90 Laser RS AWD with a $700 Evo III turbo and 720 injectors, because he'll pass you in the straights like you're in reverse... and might even pull on you in the corners, too.

You can call my a cynic. The important thing is that you have fun and keep your helmet on.

atleast for a lap or two, then it will fall apart in one of 100 different ways

Someone up top had it right, get an s2000 put some brake pads on it and your head and shoulders above where you would be with tons of money dropped into a project hatch, You can find s2ks for as little as 12k these days, make sure its well maintained and you have your track animal

Yeah, a S2K would be great but, dude might not have 12K for an SK2. Since dude mention that about a RS w/ evo turbo. The turbo is good but an RS was some garbage. I had a 90 GSX loved it.
Another car you and your dad can look for not as light but great starting point. DC2 GSR 94-97. Already have a B18C1 170hp. You won't have to do a swap. You can build it up some. Of course it'll be a little heavier than a EF or EG hatch. You can find a good stock 94-95 for maybe 3-4 K. Also check out a auction.

Actually the laser RS turbo was the best bang-for-the-buck weekend racer made by the DSM clan because it was the lightest, sunroof-free, least-laden in powered options car without ABS. The AWD Laser RS Turdo is now really flippin' hard to find.

The engine in my colt came from a '90 Laser. It was a PA car. I sent the chassis off for a good crushing. RIP you Plymouth rust bucket.

The only reason I recommended that car is because it can be had for under $1000 with an engine that makes 3x the whp & torque of a civic hatch, a cast-iron block that never needs sleeves, and then there's $6k left in the budget for mods. Totally do-able. 'course it's heavier, but with AWD, a lot less has to be done to make it stick. IMO after having both, they're both just as easy to work on, the engines just spin in opposite directions (hondas spin backwards :db: )

I agree with that. My 90 GSX timing belt went & damaged my valves. I had to get top half rebuilt which cost like $1500. I was still stock except for my K&N filter. I was running 14'9 to low 15's all day long. I really miss my GSX. It was Red & the cleanest one I've ever saw orig. paint. Only thing I hated because never got around to getting was a turbo timer. It was annoying sitting thre like 2-5 min to cool down turbo.Of all my cars I've owned since 90 Power wise 1)GSX 2)GSR -have 3)91 Civic Si B16 A swap have 4) 74 VW Superbeetle 1641cc motor not because of power. Just loved that car.
The GSX,Talon TSI are harder to find. But, yes I would look for a GSR & remember they only came in 4 colors 94-97. So as you can see there are quite a few cars you can look at.
