B16 No Boost!
so last night i nearly got into a fight with some dumb-ass dude named Joel who's a friend of my cousin. so joel states that he should not put the greddy kit that i gave him few months back. the guy said that B16's don't handle boost very well and wont last 2years, even at the lowest levels of boost, so i laughed and told the guy that he was on crack. so i come to ask you CIVIC guys if this is true and if your B16 is turboed how long have you had it with no problems.

Depends on a lot of things, age of the engine, how it was tuned, how well the setup was put together, how he drives, etc.
But your friend is right in that if I wanted to make 100% sure I don't accidentally blow my engine I wouldn't put a turbo on it.

hes using an Hondata to tune with, the B16 was swapped a year ago. roughly has 60K miles. it doesn't make sense cause my uncle had an greddy kit with the eManage for almost 4 years and the only thing he ever changed was the head gasket. so thats why i didn't believe that B16's are not good engines to turbo, even at low boost.
the greddy kit comes with engine management thats very conservative to begin with and is set at a low boost level. people on ht have stock b16's with nothing more then headstuds and a new headgasket making over 300whp. its not safe to do so in my opinion with an otherwise stock bottom end but, b series engines have showed a good bit of resilience to blowing up...unless your name is tony..sorry, i had to say it.
b16's were never ment for turbo, none of the b-series were.. but it depends on the user and his knowledge of these things to not blow the shit outa the motor, you could also try to make a safety switch for your turbo, it's been done before by someone on either this forum or hondaswap, not sure. But your best bet is to not turbo it to make sure the motor lasts. don't f*k around with certain ebay-cheap brands for turbo parts, piping yes u can go cheap, turbo=hell no, header=hell no. and b16 can handle safe levels of ~8psi, anything more is doable but not reliable, anything more it'd be good to either get new pistons and rods( which should be done anywayz) and/or get it sleeved.. but that's big dough unless you cna do it yourself
your friend there is dead wrong to assume it cant handle boost period, but he can be right if you don't boost it right, with the right tune, etc.

You can NOT gauge an engine blowing up based on amount of PSI, you have to gauge it on hp with a proper tune.
Throw some strong head studs in a b16 and it will definatly handle 300hp on stock internals once it's tuned. If your planning on beating on the car, spend 700 bux on some forged pistons & rods and then beat on it. Hell that will allow you run about 400-450hp out of the engine at that point and you next limiting factor is going to be your stock sleeves that people generally try and stay away from the 500hp mark.
and as far as this "safty switch" on the turbo that Meshca is talking about.. :wtf: You are clueless!
Buy quality parts, and make sure it's tuned properly, the engine will last.
