well, its the same thing, thats what i meant. anyway, the new bmw in question apparently has some feature in which you can instruct the car to grip speed, and it will engage the clutch as efficiently as possible. purdy slick.

I heard about that but I thought they did it to a Miata or MRSpyder, not BMW. Seems kind of pointless though, whats wrong with the old method.

you will never achieve perfect traction on your own. the computer will get as close as possible.

I thought you no longer had a clutch pedal with that thing? And without it it wouldn't be as good as the car doesn't know what's going to happen, the driver does.

driver judges whats "going to happen" just as a computer does. checks tire speed, slippage, things of that nature.

its seems people here arent stickin to topic here but anyways....maybe im just not as car-competent as you guys but i always thought the "changing gear" on automatics was the over drive. or is over drive a "different gear." i guess dont know as much as i should about cars huh?

Ok i have a 95 civic automatic. I don't know if this is really a technique to use so it might just be stupid. Whenever I'm racing instead of just stomping my foot on the gas pedal(flooring it), I floor it but when I feel like its going to change gears I let off for a second and floor it again. I dunno...I feel like it accelerates much much faster than when I just floor it and dont do anything. Becuase when im just flooring it, it feels sluggish and its not accelerating fast enough but whenever i let off the gas and floor it, it kinda kicks in and starts accelerating.. I dunno this might be something stupid, because an automatic is an automatic and it wont ever be fast but im just wondering if anyone else does this or why this feels like its going faster?
yur allowing the gears to change. its fine.

over drive is a low-torque gear for fuel mileage. 5th gear in stick shifts.

that throttle up when you stomp the pedal is the machine downshifting for you.

Oh, you're talking about the BMW M3 SMG! :yumyum:
It's supposed to shift faster than a pro, so they say, as fast as 80 milliseconds. It automatically rev-matches too, so smooth!!

its ok to manualy **** with auto trannys .. the handbook inside the glove compartment says its just like shifting with manual when u shift 1,2,d3,d3 and down.... about that rev in neutral and slam into drive, im not sure how safe that is on ur tranny but it sure does take off, with lots of wheel spin.. if it dont say in handbook. dont do it !
