High RPMs
Just wondering if this was normal, to get my car to like 60, i have to do at LEAST 3k rpm in each gear to get up to 60 in a decent amount of time (while merging onto a highway). Is this normal for civics? Ive heard that its not good for the car to run the rpms up that high, but if i kept em lower, it would take me like 5 minutes to get up to 60.
Also at about 65mph, i am doing about 3k rpms. Is this safe because i do travel a good distance to work doing about 70-75 @3500 rpms. question is, are civics built for this? or is there some kind of engine oil i can put in there for higher rpms, or even is there somewhere i can tune the tranny....Most autos ive driven do 1,500 @ 60mph
sorry i have a 96 civic 4dr ex d16y8 non vtec

First off, D16Y8 IS a SOHC Vtec 127 HP engine, no matter what ANYONE tells you.
Second, Drive that bitch to redline. your power is above 4500 mph, and it is made for it. I have 115,000 miles on my car and hit redline EVERY TIME i need to pass/accel around/through etc.

First of all, your car does have a VTEC engine as XS pointed out. And don't worry about the RPM's. The motor is built by Honda to be revved that high. Although you might be used to lower RPMs, you probably have been driving a lot of 6 and 8 cylinder cars. Basically what it comes down to is that with 4 cylinders, you need to rev it higher to get power out of it. At 75 mph on the highway, you should be up at about 3500 rpms with that motor/tranny combo. It is perfectly fine.
Get used to the high revving if you're going to drive 1.6L imports

Right. On most Hondas in order to get the most out of the engine you have to go high. Your VTEC cross over is about 5500rpms. Don't worry about redlining either. It's a soft redline and will not kill your engine UNLESS you downshift from say 80mph in 5th gear to 2nd gear = that's bad.
My 2000 Honda Civic Si is over 4 years old with about 180 autocrosses on it and about 70,000 miles. And the engine still runs strong. Redlined many times
It's something you get used to when owning a Honda.

My Honda/Acura integra is a 95 with 183k and I redline that bitch all the way up about 3-4 times a day if not 20-30 times a day and I never never never have a problem. I start it up and once is warms up if your sitting in my car or outside you don't even know it's on. So rev it up as long as you have the $ for gas other then that your good to go. Enjoy your VTEC shit that's what it's there for.
