A DSM is only fun if you have something else to drive. My bad on the tach, I have one, and I was taking it for granted.

A CX hatch is a highway-capable go-kart. Of course it's easy without power steering. You just have to drive non-power steering cars differently. If you're not at a dead stop, you can still toss the wheel around, but it can get tiresome if you do a LOT of stop/start city driving... and you if ain't got a set (act like you do). It's not a heavy enough car to really warrant having power steering. It is a heck of a lot more responsive. You'll feel more bump-steer, too.

In other words, you get used to it.

Yeah, but I wouldn't bother with it with the CX motor. You'd need a new crank pulley (which would have different timing marks than a CX because the motors that use a 3-groove pulley have a different base timing) and all the brackets, a power steering rack, reservoir, cooler (optional), and maybe even new front hub assemblies... I'm not sure about the last one.

But the good news is that all the bolt holes are in the block, chassis, etc... so if the donor car is a D15 powered dx/lx, you'll have no trouble.

Try it first. You might like it. The power steering stuff is heavy. But if you do change your mind, at least someone with an Si that autocrosses, or a weight-conscious straigt-line racer will happily buy your manual rack if it's in good shape. You may be able to work a swap out with someone. I doubt they'll want any of your CX brakes or suspension parts.

In my case, I have an LX 1.5L engine that USED to have power steering on it and now it doesn't (because my chassis doesn't). I'm using my CX crank pulley with it because I didn't get the DX crank pulley with either of my engines. Fine by me. Less rotating mass than a 3-groove pulley.

The timing mark issue mentioned above was solved by using the CX timing cover. TDC marks line up and are still correct, so I use that instead of the other marks, and just dial the timing light in to what the DX/LX base timing is supposed to be.

If you use the crank pulley and timing cover from the same power steering equipped engine, you won't have issues with timing marks. If you change over to the lighter 2-groove pulley to save weight when you delete the power steering from a car, you need the timing cover, too.

Maybe my D15B7 didn't come from a 92-95 and that's why, but the two timing covers I had were different? A D15B7 is the sohc 16v 1.5L used in 92-95 DX/LX's. I don't know what else came with a D15B7 except a 1.5L Del Sol. I found both engines in the dirt and made one out of them... I don't know where they came from or how old it was.

True. I forgot those were mandatory by '94 for all mfr's. DSM's had them by 94, too.
