How to do a compression test?

Can I hook up the gauge, then go to the car and crank the engine, then comeback and read the gauge? Or do I need someone cranking the engine while I look at the gauge?

Why hold down the accelerator when there's no fuel or spark? It won't do anything. :db:
the only reason people hold down the gas pedal is because on some cars having it floored while cranking will disable the fuel supply. I'm not sure of this but that is what i have heard. but if you have disconnected the spark and fuel, then there is no reason to hold down the pedal
I did the test. The car has the D16Y7 engine with about 175,000 km. (about 110k miles). The compression was around 160psi on each cylinder (+- 2-3 PSI). Engine was hot. I pressed the accelerator pedal all the way to open the throttle. I took out the 15 amp fuse for the fuel pump. I cranked the engine for about 5 seconds each time.
Are these descent numbers?

I just did mine today, in fear that I already blew my head gasket (just got done rebuilding this winter, and had a radiator hose blow off while I was stuck in traffic and didn't realize...)
The specs for a d16z6 it says...
Standard 185
minimum 135
After my fresh rebuild, I'm running 160 across the board. Could have something to do with the pistons I used, which are supposedly 0.1 lower in compression...
With 160 on a y7, you're sittin pretty.
