Default My conundrum

well, i got a problem (sorta). As some of you may know, I'm planning a cr-vtec build up. I was planning on putting together either an n/a motor around 11.3:1 c/r or a slighly lower (~10.0:1) c/r for room for a healthy dose of n2o. Luckily, I haven't started buying parts yet.

The problem is, my roommate is willing to donate his turbo to my cause. Its a garret exhaust housing .48 ar, and a Saab garret turbine (i forget what size off the top of my head) hybrid; a pretty swell turbo.

As you also may know, my car is an autocross beater. I have raced enough turbo cars to know that I don't want mine to be turbo (just doesn't work very well with autox). So now I need to make some decisions... do I turbo the shitbox and buy an old Si or sentra and start all over again in H-stock? Do I continue chortling through STS in my unhealthy VX and try and save up for a 4-door teg to put the turboed motor in? Or do I just forget the whole thing? I'm certainly a fan of turbo (used to drive a supra), but its just not gonna happen on my autox beater. And as we all know, a turbo is just a catalyst for more spending (intercooler, plumbing, management, manifold, etc..) and I'm not exactly made of money.

Ideas, advice, flames...

do the first thing... or the second. :dunno:

I agree that boost isn't a X friend. I'll take the turbo if you're not going to be needing it. :rick:

I would give the turbo a shot. Heck it's free. The only problem I'm thinking down the road though is keeping it cool. Especially during autocross where you are on and off the gas and on the courses for short amount of time, not enough to keep the intercooler cool.

I don't know what I'd do in your shoes. I want more power too, but I like slaughtering everyone in STS

he'd probably make somebody else pay for it. :chuckles: But I'll definitely keep you informed.

I've thought about this a lot too. The procharger kit seems to be a pretty sweet supercharger (air-to-air intercooling, thoughtful design, relative light weight), and I wouldn't loose the instant throttle response I need. But thats always been a WAY down the road sorta option. Thats probably the only s/c I'd consider, and its far out of my price range.

you have that luxury. My VX is very unhealthy right now (and I don't really see the situation improving, because I'm not willing to put any money into it). It's probably putting something like 50 or 60 to the ground right now, which -as little as overall power matters in autocross- is barely enough to get me by in STS right now. (I got dead last at an event for the first time this season--a faster, wide-open course )

There is a guy doing OK in SM in my region in his turbo LS (Weston, he posts here sometimes I think), but he's getting more into the solo trials (timed roadracing), I don't really know how well he's been doing at the autocrosses. I would be happy to get more into the solo trials, but my car isn't technically legal (neither is his) because SM cars need a roll bar (he can slip by tech by classing his car OSP--"other" street prepared). But if I want to be competitive at a regional level, I have a number of rules to take into considerarion. If I did turbo the shitbox, I'd definitely get more into the solo trials (still haven't done one personally), but that just brings a whole other set of concerns into the picture :dunno:

as you can see, I'm torn

:edit: its funny you mention the intercooler problem... my roomy is working on fabricating an intercooler bypass pipe on his SM saab (straight from turbo to throttle body--like two feet of total plumbing :eek3: ) to work with his water injection so he has better throttle response on the autocross course.

take the turbo, sell it, and use that money to add to the fund for what you really want to do with your car.
