true, but you can't compare the grip of a 245 to a 195. all things being equal, i'd rather have a 17" 245 tire than a 14" 195. 15" 225's work wonderfully for me, however. unless i need to get bigger brakes, which is a possibility, 15's are what im always going to run.

sure you can 245 street tire versus 195 R compounds

Speaking of grip, I went to the strip recently and turned the same (within .2 seconds of each other) 60-ft times with my 380 treadwear, A traction 185/65/R14 sumitomo's as I did with my 280 treadwear, AA traction 205/45/R16 Kumho's. What does that mean?....................I don't know, someone tell me. Keep in mind this was purely straight line acceleration, and I know the Kumho's are better autocross tires. I am talking pure straight traction.

You can't compare treadware rating across different manufacturers.

Only tires made by the same manufacturer is the rating useful since each use different methods to come up with the rating.

.2 is a HUGE difference in 60'. You're talking .3-.4 seconds off your 1/4 with that difference.

man, it really depends on what i have lying around. i've used 225/45/15 hoosier a3s03's, kumho 205 and 225/50/15's, 225/45/15 and 205/50/15 street TD's. i will be using 225/50/15 comp t/a's (old, old road race compound) for an autocross this weekend.

i have civic pro-kit springs in the front. when i put my new engine in, they compressed an additional half inch, so, things rub up front. however, with the right springs, im convinced rubbing will not be an issue.

as far as contact patch goes, the hoosier a3so3's were HUGE. the 225 street td's were more comparable to the 205 kumhos. i've never felt my car pull so many g's as it did with the 225 street td's. that was when i tore my subframe a new one, so to speak. i think that new, heat cycled a3s03's would rock on a road course. the ones i ran on were pretty crunchy. for autocross, if money were not an issue, i'd stick with street td's. my next set of tires will be kumhos, because i can't afford hoosiers.

the reason i use so many different tires is because we have all sorts of used R compound tires lying around our shop. they have enough tread for a few events, and they would otherwise just be sitting there if i didnt use them.

hth!

Do you know which kumhos? Ecsta V700, victoracer, MX, or 712?

I wanted to try out the MX but they weren't in stock at tire rack fast enough so I went with Toyo T1-S. I needed the tires for min 2 weeks so i can break them in for the last event, which is an enduro. 3 2lap runs on saturday and one five lap one on sunday

I take it that you meant to say 1/4 not 1/2. Anyway, there was hardly any difference in my times. 17.2 to about a 17.0 even. That's it. And I can chalk that up to getting more agressive on my shifts as the night went on.

At a drag race .2 is a big difference to me. On an autocross course that's the difference between 1st and 8th place.

Alright, I guess I am putting this out in the wrong way. When my car is supposed to be running a low 16 to a high 15, and I am sitting there running 17's, so I switch to wider tires with better traction, only to run a .2 seconds faster (which like I said can be due to shifting because I even ran 17.2 and a 17.3 on the wider tires), to me wasn't all that much.

To shed more light on my point of view.....were I running 14.3's and then ran a 14.1, sheet yeah I would be happy.

Even more light is................were I running 25.0's and then ran a 24.8, I would not be happy.

See what I am getting at.........it's all relative.

By the way SiRacer, I read that post on SCCAforums about how that one guy figured it was less than an inch at 50 mph. That sucks! What can you do after losing by .001 seconds? That is entirely too close.

And which screen name is Tipple going by on there?
