Tom's got to test a copy of Doom 3 and they posted some info about it. Wasn't a final build but they did do some testing.

Looks like any of the newer 128 cards should run it just fine at medium resolution.

yeah, everytime I price out a computer setup, I check Dell's website for an identical setup, it's always quite a bit more expensive.
Plus, it's more fun to build it yourself.

The cheapest I can get a 3.0Ghz, 512M 8300 with a 17" LCD down to is $1793. That's with their smalled HD and a 64Meg Ge4Force 4 MX graphics card (basically a rebadged Ge4Force 2 card). Like it was mentioned before, you can't really do any upgrading on Dell's either. They use a propritary MB with most of the BIOS controls locked out and other things (PS, memory...). Great machines if you just want to turn it on and use it, but I want something I built myself.

I'm in the process of Building me one, but i wouldn't prefer Pentium though. I would go for dual MP or may be single athlon XP. P4 2.4, 2.8 or even 3.06 GHZ doesn't mean that your comp will be that fast. It can only run as fast as the SLOWEST component in your system. Weird but true.

BTW, you should look forward to the system chipset, P4 doesn't have good graphic ones. I would prefer those AMDs that use nVidia nForce 2 Chipset because it's awsome. Though it FSB is only as fast as 400 MHZ.

So, when you're building a system, It best to look forward of getting all the components to keep up with your CPU speed. All my applications and works never require or run pass 1.4 GHZ. So as long as all my other components are faster, I can always go with a lower speed CPU to save money and still running faster than those other later CPU.

btw, AMD is so much easier to overclock and financial right.

I've been working with 3D, animations, Cad, and any other graphic softwares.

The last time, we tried to benchmarked my old 1.2 GHZ AMD Athlon with my friend P4 2.2 GHZ. Mine came out to by faster and outperform his PC in any categories

Sad thing is, it got stolen :madfawk:

all those components he chose are top of the line so they will work extremely great together...even though that mem could go higher but he doesnt want to OC

Higher FSB doesn't mean the comp will perform as fast in all means. I've seen both of my professors' PCs, they used lower speed CPUs, but their comps are EXTREMELY fast. I've never seen anything that fast running games, 3D applications, etc.

BTW, Andy's setup is pretty sweet. I didn't say it sux. But I rather choose a diff set up cheaper and end up having it run the same thing at the same speed. While having my money for other things add-ons as well.
