Karma 1: Homeless dude 0
I've never had to deal with a homeless person. True story.
I did give money, loose change, to some huge crazy (or mentally-ill) dude once though. He ran up to me as I was getting into my car, just jumped the question on me so I didn't even have time to think. That's how you do it.
Even if some homeless are just lazy douchebags, the majority seem like they've probably got serious issues (and I know it can be hard to get a job sometimes) so although you might be encouraging them to continue as is, it seems like the right thing to help them out when you can... better to give food certainly, that way you know they aren't going to spend it on something less-nutritious :hsugh:

my best homeless guy story ever ...
out with afriend, her and i are leaving a bar and this homeless dude comes up. im like great hes gonna want food money. dude goes, listen folks im not gonna lie. It's fucking cold out, i sleep in a alley and i beg for food but right now all i want is some whiskey to fight off the cold. i could make up a story but im not going to. all i want is a couple bucks to buy a pint of whatever i can afford and if you can spare it i'd appreciate.
i was so blown away by the guys honesty that i used the money i had in my pocket for a cab to buy him a pint of jack and i walked the mile home. bums just arent straight forward like that these days and i felt like if your going to be honest with me why cant i walk home instead of riding in a warm car.

a 1 or 2 homeless people die from the cold nights here every winter. sucks. they are shutting down the shelters downtown and opening them up in the outskirts. then there is this 1 guy who trys to solicit homeless women for sex, saying that he can stay at his place.
ran into a bum this past week, granted, i have seen him many times around town the past couple years, so i know whats up.. but he approached me and a friend while i was working on said friends car (3 days later, still on the side of the highway). dude gave us a story about how his wife for 1x years left him and drained his bank account and how he had to borrow the bicycle he was riding, even took cig butts out to show us what he "had to smoke". he asked if we knew of any churches giving out food vouchers, so i pointed him to one a few miles away.. before he left he asked if we had any cash, so i told him i would see if i had some change in the car. ended up giving him $.50 and he rode away
A couple hobo stories from my visit to Chicago a couple months ago:
1) I was walking down the street and some guy asked for 80 cents, as if he has something specific he wanted to buy. I gave him a quarter and went inside. About 5 minutes later I came back out and walked by him again and he asked for 80 cents again.
2) One guy asked me for change and I didn't have any (I generally don't give any even if I have some). He apparently took offense to that because I was wearing a nice suede jacket and if I was dressed that well, I must have change. So he followed me for three blocks ranting about how "if you don't have any money looking like that, you might as well shoot yourself."
There are plenty of hobos in Boulder, but they leave you alone for the most part.
lol, I was running at night a couple weeks ago and ran past this couple sitting under a street lamp... looked like they were arguing/having a serious conversation. As I ran past, the chick stopped mid-sentence to shout, "way to go man! You can do it!" I just waved back and smiled.... I got a big kick out of that

If they ask me for money, I'll ask them what for... if they say food... I'll go buy them food. If they say anything else I tell them I don't have any spare change
This bum once told me that he was using it to buy food, i offered to buy him a meal and he said no and gave me an attitude
So I walked away bought a fucking burger and ate in front of him.

i dont give them fuckfaces any money. even if it's pennies. i used to offer food if i was already at a fastfood joint, but fuck that too. i gave a breakfast sandwich to a bum once at a jack in the box. motherfucker takes it and throws it away. FUCK U AND UR MENTAL ILLNESS. zero sympathy for bums.
