No one said life was fair. That's why most people/companies don't accept checks. Your bank probably has that in writing somewhere that they're going to do that...

we use these in our AR dept ... i just built a training presentation actually on those for our retail stores because it confuses alot of them. its essentially a photocopy but its valid to deposit just like a real check, throws people off

your bank sucks - tell them to get the money from the checks issuing bank and give you back the money they charged against you. and then tell them to charge the issuing bank those lame charges.

if they dont and give you crap about it, tell them to cash out your account and close it. then proceed to another bank and open a new account

Yes dispute it, it's not your fault that the other person didn't have any money, and you shouldn't have to pay a stop payment fee.

Thank you, exactly what I thought.

I think I'll try to go tomorrow after class. If they won't take it off, I'll close my account....even though I don't want to and don't know what bank to open one at.

definitely dispute it. how could you possibly know the status of another person's account? no way this is your fault, no way you should be held accountable.

that's common. why do you thing stores and companies charge nsf fees? it's so they can cover the fees that they incur when someone writes them a bad check.

you need to contact the check issuer and advise them of the incurred charges.

also, in the future, it's always a good idea to cash checks on the bank they're drawn at when at all possible then deposit the cash into your account. that would surely prevent just such an event.

That makes sense, but I've honestly never heard of doing that before. Like I said before, I had multiple checks (all personal checks) so it wouldn't have been feasible to go to all of those banks to cash them.
