question about CC authorizations
i always run a tab at coyote ugly & their pre-authorization is always some wierd amount......like $16.80. it's never in whole amounts :squint:
so a couple of weeks ago, it was the day before payday & my account was low on $$$ & there was no convienant atm around, so i decided to just run a tab & keep it under what i had left in my account (which was like $30). so i bought me & my bartender friend there each a shot & gave her my card thinking she would run a tab, but she closed it. so i told her to just keep it open & run it later......
well they "pre-authorized" my accout twice...once for $16.80 (random # again since the actual 1st round was $14)....then after i bought her another shot for the whole total of $23 the "pre-authorization" was $33.60
i didn't think anything about it since the actual charge to my account was $23(she won't let me tip her when i'm buying her shots)....but low & behold if my bank didn't charge me 2 overdraft charges for the "pre-authizations" that never went thru

had to get in a pissing contest w/ them to get the overdraft charges reversed, so i learned to just goto the fucking atm next time

Some companies overcharge so it doesn't get declined...they automatically put an even number like $25 for a 22.67 transaction..happened to me before, but after it was done pending it was for what I actually paid...but $100 for a $57 is odd
update:
so im bout to head down the bank for this
finally today got charged that $57 but im still showing a pending of that $100
because of this my account went negative and im showing 3 overdrafts
called the bank they said its the business that fucked up and needs to release a hold AND i need to recoup the overdrafts from them becuase its not a bank error
call the bar and they knew exactly what i was talking about, explained how their process works where they pre-authorize a card and claim this is the banks fault. girl was really helpful and even said if upon contacting the bank again they refuse to come down with a statement and my receipt and she could get the owner involved if necessary
anyone have any insight?

okay i didnt read everybody elses responses but here is the bankers explanation:
the bar is going to preauthorize a higher dollar amount because before they run a tab for you, they want to make sure you can actually pay them for it. most places just use a standard number, such as $100. if your tab was starting to run higher than that, chances are they would have reauthorized your card. hotels usually do a similar thing to make sure you dont destroy a room or incase you steal towels or rent a bunch of porn.
gas stations are different, they typically just run a $1 authorization to make sure the account is open.
more banking law: if a bank authorizes a transaction of any amount, they are required to honor the authorization. for instance if you get gas and they authorize your transaction for $1 and you get $50 worth of gas but only have $20 in your account, your bank has to the transaction for $50 whereas if you had written a check, the check would be returned NSF.

so just got back from bank and the dude was awesomely helpful
heres the details:
that $100 charge is showing as a transaction, so the bar ran through that $100 and then ran through the $57 as well. this is a error on the bars part. but because there is no way for the bar to show a signed copy / prove to the bank that this is a valid transaction he told me monday at midnight (5 business days) i will see this transaction drop off. BUT because it still shows i now have $99 in overdrafts, and another $66 that will be applied monday due to pending transactions.
its here i hit teh bad shit. because the bar in fact fucked up and ran the preauth through at $100 instead of a $1 charge and they actually ran it its all their fault, the bank didnt screw up anywhere. the $100 will drop like i said but the $165 in charges i need to recoup from them. he went over and marked everything on my papers and told me to have the bar call him if they want to argue the details of what happened.
the guy then called my servicing location and they agreed that they would credit me HALF the charges from the bank. so now im only out $83 which i still have to get from the bar. soooo in about 30 minutes im heading on down to the club to bitch someone out with all paperwork in hand

ok thanks guys ... problem is being taken care of 100% now
bank is covering half the fee's and says that the $100 will drop on monday because there is no signed receipt showing i made the transaction
got off the phone with the club manager and he was totally cool, said come down at 7, he'd go ahead take care of it and make it all square with me, told him all i wanted was half the over draft fee's credited back because the bank is taking the other half
i know i could have got all 165 the way the guy was totally ready to help plus 82 from the bank but in a way thats stealing and even if it is all over overpriced booze i dont cheat business's no matter how shady they can be.
