Default question about CC authorizations

so went to bar last night, and put my drinks on my debit card like usual

well this morning i'm looking at my online statement and it shows that i have a $100 pending transaction at the bar i was at last night, but the receipt i have in my hand from the bar shows $57 ... wtf?

i've never had that before, are they trying to cheat me here or is it like a pre-authorization that will clear out because on the CC receipt it does say offline transaction

if it goes through as a $100 dispute it... I've had that happen to me... the pending transaction is more than what I paid for, but what was taken out is what I paid for...

basically..

wait a bit...

To my knowledge, you're not supposed to get hit with a pending that doesn't match the actual.

There are Visa penalty fees associated to mismatching transaction amounts. No retailer / owners wants those.

they will hit you will a large pending to make sure the card actually exists. i mean some people have little to no limit on cc.

yea thats what i always do

i mean i'm totally fine with the whole pre-authorize, gas stations do the same thing and it makes total sense especially when you have lots of people there, someone may give you a shoddy card and its bad

it's just this is the first time i've seen a amount double my tab show up on my account.

if your Debit card has a Visa or MC logo, it can be run as a credit card in the register.

They run it like a credit because:

a) the bar wants him to physically sign the tab so they can get the handwritten tip.
b) they don't have a keypad to accept the debit's pin number.

AH. I see.

Just wait then. It'll appear at the proper amount. Looks like they were just checking your limits.

In the retail world "pre-authorization" means we've sent your CC data to the bank and we're awaiting payment feedback. We'd never send a number that doesn't match what's on the order.

In your case, they didn't know if you were going to drink $100 or $20 ... so they'd better know how much you could afford before serving.
