i already got the parental unit interested in building one ... he said depending on how mine looks and shoots he might want something with like a 24" bull barrel ... be fun to do 2 of them this year instead of one

at 200 yards a standard 16" would probably be fine. if you want a tack driver go with a bull barrel.

If weight matters at all I have a 16" bull barrel and my complete gun weighs in at 9lbs

20" is as big an effective barrel you will need for long range reach (as long as a 223 can be expected) at 24" you lose velocity from what I know and only see minor differences between the 16 and 20 barrels.

yea i think im going to go with a 16" barrel

the bull, not yet. if i can punch out to 200 yds effectively enough to pop groundhogs then i dont see the need for a bull barrel or anything over a 20" yet

Honestly I would go bull barrell regardless. It makes a bigger difference in long range shooting than you would expect. I run them on all my ARs and also on several other rifles. The overall stability and tack sharp accuracy offsets any weight disadvantage.

Of course I have lugged 15lb rifles 3 days in the woods to drop elk and although it gets heavy it isn't intolerable.

Better components
Knowledge of the rifle
lower overall cost
built to suit your needs with no need to re-engineer an existing product

Basically it is an overall better machine because buying a prebuilt leaves a lot to be questioned. I have heard of (though rare) people tearing down a rifle they have owned for years thinking it had a certain trigger group only to find out it wasn't what they asked for. It's rare but it does happen.
