ING Direct
i do since 2004.
pros: simple interface, decent interest
cons: not the rate leader in interest anymore, no atm access
i've moved all my savings to washington mutual where the interest is higher and more convenient for me since i already do checking there.

Fiance has an account with them earning 4-5% interest....pretty good imo.
I don't know a ton about finances, but I know he hasn't had any problems with them and he can do pretty much everything online. :dunno:

What's WaMu's interest rate on a savings account? And is there a minimum balance and/or fee?
I'm looking for something that makes it harder for me to touch.. so.. not having an ATM isn't a bad thing in this situation.

Basic wamu savings account is probably anywhere from 0.10-0.30% interest. Money Market Savings accounts are usually higher, but require a large amount of funds.
I've had an ING account for 2-3 years. Very easy to use. Transfers usually take 2-3 days (pretty standard for bank-to-bank fund transfers), website is very easy to navigate, understand, and log into. ING doesn't have the best rate available online, other sites have better (capitalone, hsbc, emigrant direct), but I think ING's ease of use really makes up for the difference.
If you want a referral for ING, and can do an opening deposit of 250 bucks or more, you can get 25 extra dollars free (and I get an extra $10 too), so PM me your email address if you're interested.

i get 5% for my wamu online savings account versus 4.5% at ING. small difference but transfers are faster and access is more convenient for me.
i think the minimum balance for online savings is $300. you have to have a wamu checking account linked to it.

Well that's kinda poopy. Don't really want to open up a random checking account somewhere else when I already have one.

I already have a savings account too, I'm just looking for something secure, with little temptation to touch that I can leave alone for a year.

ING would be a good choice for you then. one thing i did like about it was the automatic transfer function. it would take a set amount every payday (15th and last day of month) and put it in my ING account. or you can even have your employer do direct deposit split into your checking and ING .
your other options would be hsbcdirect and emigrantdirect which pay 5.05% i think, but isn't as easy to use. their interface is more cluttered.
