The only reason you'd write a certified check is if you mail it.

When I worked retail (1997 to 2001) it was a guarantee that armed forces checks would bounce.

Never release a vehicle or anything for that matter when receiving a personal or cashier's check without first calling the bank and verifying funds.
I had a friend who took a Cashier's Check for his swapped Civic, had his mother (who was a bank manager) just look at it and she said it looked legit, went to cash it and it was bogus.
