i just don't take personal checks :dunno:

I tell them to take it out and put it on a MO or something... then they can give it to me.

Like an MO can't be forged just as easily

I would do direct transfer myself for large ticket items and once the deposit is confirmed the exchange of goods takes place. Basically go to his bank and have them elctronically drop it into your account. Once it is done on his end and you have witnessed it there is no way you get screwed

Never release a vehicle or anything for that matter when receiving a personal or cashier's check without first calling the bank and verifying funds.

I had a friend who took a Cashier's Check for his swapped Civic, had his mother (who was a bank manager) just look at it and she said it looked legit, went to cash it and it was bogus.

I wouldn't normally accept personal checks either especially if you look shady. But I seem to put a trust in some people, and I know that can lead to someone taking advantage of the situation. Scammers suck.

I don't care what bank it's from, just make it a certified check and only during regular banking hours. You go over to your bank and run the check through and then and only then do you turn over the keys.
