I've had my mini for about 2 years...used constantly at the gym, while running and lifting weights. I've dropped it numerous times, a couple of times it's actually flown off my belt line and landed hard on the ground about 10' away.

Thing still works like a champ.

My PS2 had a dirty laser that was causing loading issues. On alcohol-soaked cotton swab later after spending like 5 minutes with a screwdriver, and it worked fine. My original, bought-it-the-first-week-they-were-out 1st gen iPod had one battery replacement, and it still works fine.

you should have cycled the battery the first few days... usually that will help.

but other than that i'd have to say either replace the whole thing or take it in to get it repaired, apple will replace the battery for you. my sisters friend has had her 3rd gen's replaced twice already.
