I like my Mac. It isn't perfect, but the build quality is good, and I like OSX. OSX isn't perfect, either. I like it more than XP, I should say. It depends on what you're using it for. Office for Mac is useless on Intel macs. It runs terribly on top of Rosetta. Photoshop CS2 is cumbersome on top of Rosetta as well. CS3 beta runs very nicely, though.

I am willing to pay a premium for good build quality. Do you know how frustrating it is to have two laptops where the hinge is falling apart after 3-4 months?

Good point. I am just doing general internet surfing / word processing. Some photo editing but nothing big. I don't play games.

The $1500 range came from pricing out a 2.0ghz MacBook (middle one) with 3 yr Apple Care. I can get an education discount through my mom or sister who are both educators. I feel that is about what I am looking for spec wise for a new laptop.

1500 is overkill for just web browsing/word processing and "some photo editing." Check around for deals at schools, mine was selling a 13.3in Macbook Pro for 699. Don't know the processor speed but 699.99 is good just for web browsing / word processing.

i run my IBM prolly 12-16 hours out of the day every day...no issues ever. the laptop stays relativly cool as well

My feeling is that while the stats of the MacBook (or other comparable laptops) may be overkill, it will last for at least three years. I like to tote my laptop around with me whether I am traveling, walking the city, etc. Durability is the biggest thing I am looking for because my needs do not require me to have a cutting edge machine all of the time. My current machine is fine for what I need, but the build quality is crap and it's falling apart.

either it was a regular macbook or an old powerbook because there is no such thing as a 13 inch macbook pro.

computers are like cars....more power is always better!

Just to add to the Macbook thing, mine's been on for 45 days straight with no problems!
