I am willing to pay a premium for good build quality. Do you know how frustrating it is to have two laptops where the hinge is falling apart after 3-4 months?

Good point. I am just doing general internet surfing / word processing. Some photo editing but nothing big. I don't play games.

The $1500 range came from pricing out a 2.0ghz MacBook (middle one) with 3 yr Apple Care. I can get an education discount through my mom or sister who are both educators. I feel that is about what I am looking for spec wise for a new laptop.
