I'd use auto-gk. It will rip it to xvid for ya.

here's a guide http://www.rita.lt/guides/AutoGK_DVDtoAVI.htm

never go from DVD -> xvid or divx unless you trying to save space, the quality sucks and just now worth it.

dvd shrink didn't do that, just a bunch of random files, no mpg or avi or anything

you need a program that will open the files created by dvd shrink...

winDVD or PowerDVD can open them.

Media Player Classic (free) can also open them.

DVDs aren't .avi or .mpg files. Programs convert the DVD files .vob and others into a compressed format such as divx or xvid, but in my opinion those aren't worth it.

So as said you need a program like VLC, winDVD or PowerDVD to play them. You select the directory and it'll load them up.

DVD Shink just rips the DVD straight to your hdd. It can also compress and take stuff out of the dvd, but it is still in dvd format on your hdd.

You could use the programs others are telling you to use, or you could use DVD shrink to rip the dvd to an image file, then just mount it with a program like Alcohol.

Do you really need the quality of a dvd if you are just going to watch it on your computer? Personally I would use a different program and rip it to divx or xvid to save hdd space.
