DVDs aren't .avi or .mpg files. Programs convert the DVD files .vob and others into a compressed format such as divx or xvid, but in my opinion those aren't worth it.

So as said you need a program like VLC, winDVD or PowerDVD to play them. You select the directory and it'll load them up.
