Immigrants and learning English
If a person has decided to make the USA their permanent home they need to learn English. If people are visiting and temporarily they should know enough to get by. When I go to foreign countries I try my hardest not to speak English to the locals...the last time I was in Germany I got very good and learning how to order food and drinks without resorting to English and it took only 2 weeks.

Every member of my family came here from Italy and they ALL learned english. It might not have been right away, but they all learned it and/or learned to understand it eventually. I say attempt to learn it or GTFO.
It doesn't bother me if somebody speaks to me in Spanish or Russian.
Or any language that isn't English.
I think that it's kind of neat, actually. You can't go through life expecting to be comfortable in every situation. You are doing something wrong if you are.
I notice that English troubles many Americans, so expecting them to handle the burden of learning another language is outrageous. Americans like to eat, be comfortable and speak American.

Seems to me you are doing something wrong if you think everyone should know your native langauge in another country and you get pissed if they don't :dunno:
I really think that they should make classes available for the non-speaking immigrants because I'm not gonna learn spanish for shiet! Sorry but they come into the country atleast try and learn english. They don't even bother and that bugs me like crazy, cuz I can't understand them. They make me feel stupid struggling to understand what ever the heck they're trying to say.
It doesn't get to me. I see it as lazy on their part if they don't attempt to speak English, but even so many Americans get very angry with people who have thick accents and do not speak English well. Actually, people are just angry in general.
What is the alternative? Speak slowly and simply. I love people that yell at somebody that doesn't understand English well. See, Americans are like the French. They are so pressed for time that they get angry before they think about somebody other than themselves.
Anyway, I hear "I axed you" more often than I hear "le pregunte."
 Nobody says anything about the inner city people speaking poor English. It's only when they feel threatened that they enact to change something. This is far deeper than language.
