for the x-runner they actually offer a dealer accessory package- you can get your x-runner with a big brake kit designed by TRD, though it costs 2k i'm sure you could haggle.

the tacoma is really more of a smaller larger truck now. it's purpose is more like that of the f150 than that of the ranger.

i'm not getting an x-runner. i want to be able to tow off-road. a lowered truck isn't going to help much with that.

agreed. Never been too impressed with Toyota's ability to tow. Most of their engines are gutless.

Keep it light and the Toy should do O.K. Anything over about 4K pounds and you need a full size.

where do you live? around here 4x4's cost $$$ because snow season calls for a 4wd vehicle if it's an option and dealers know it.

my suggestion is for you to get a 4x4 crewcab with the v6 and manual transmission.

there are option packages avalible, generally speaking there are usually only 2 or 3 offroad packages avalible at most. the main differences you might find are side curtain airbags and possibly the addition or subtraction of daytime running lights or the upgraded stereo

the side curtains add about 1k to the price, the offroad package comes nicely equipped with bilstien shocks and a 9.5 inch ground clearance.

the bed comes standard with a composite liner (i hear they are prone to cracking, as is the optional front end skid plate. so you might wnat ot make sure they fixed those problems)

and dare i plug subaru in here but there are some things you might want to know:

the forrester has about 8 inches of ground clearance, it's AWD, can tow 2400 pounds it also pulls 14's in the quarter with an automatic. h:

just because i know, out of experience, trucks handle like trucks. at least this will be plesantly streetable as a DD in the off-season.
