As far as just giving him the loot and hoping for the best.... why?

Someone runs up to you, threatens to kill you by shoving a shotgun in your face, and you're going to take his or her word that they won't hurt you if you do what they ask? No thank you.

They've already shown to have bad judgement, shown that they are not people you can trust, and that they already have the intent or at least willingness to end your life; Why in the world would you enter into a verbal contract with them?

People need to get over this thought that "they just want my wallet." No, they want to end your life. By pointing that gun at you they've already shown the intent to end your life, so you aren't fighting for your wallet -- you're fighting for your life.

First of all, you can't say how you would have acted in a situation like that because adrenaline and instincts change everything. Not to mention, you weren't there and couldn't possibly know the full details.

Second, when you shoot at someone with a shotgun or a pistol, you're not thinking "Gee maybe if I aim for his legs." No, you aim the business end at the target and you pull the trigger praying that you put them down.

Lastly, as a former Marine, I know what they teach. They taught us to aim for the neck and the chest and the face. Once you get a stab in, don't stop stabbing till your target is limp. The sooner you drop your target, the more time you have to engage other targets and remove the threat. None of this "Oh yeah, if you stab him in the leg he will be immobile."

Go let your heart bleed somewhere else please.

:wtc:

I miss you guys

The girl was "2 weeks pregnant"? She probably DIDN'T EVEN KNOW SHE WAS PREGNANT.

I'm guessing the marine sensed that the situation was grave enough that running wasn't going to be enough. He probably took out the knife (which slowed him down) because he deduced that they would continue to pursue him (he was on foot, they had a CAR).

It's too bad he didn't manage to kill the other 3 attackers in the process.

Since one was maimed, that means the marine stopped attacking him once he was taken down. The story doesn't say, but did the marine then run or did the attackers run?

My dad had an attempted mugging happen to him once. I say attempted cause he beat the shit out of the guy and left him in the street.

My dad used to be a bouncer also. Hes no huge guy... but he knows how to fight. The guy had a pocket knife too supposedly. I wasnt there, but I dont know. I just know from my mom that he also came how with blood on him, and he wasnt cut anywhere.

Either that or he killed someone and lied to my mom...

No, typically all they want is your money. They are using the gun and their words to intimidate you into giving them the money. Are you gambling that's all they want? Yes. But if you fight, you're gambling that you have the skill (and luck) to win in the end because that is the end game. 4with firearms vs. 1 with a knife that's out of reach is not great odds in a fight. Do you think on average people can win in a situation like that? The Marine won because he got lucky that the second firearm malfunctioned. He could've just as easily been shot, and then the headlines would be very different.

Why am I giving them the wallet and hoping for the best? Because I'm choosing my fights, and trying to avoid those I am unlikely to win. Giving them the wallet != don't fight. It means that you're doing what you can to defuse the situation because it is greatly stacked against you, but being prepared to fight if it becomes necessary.

Basically he brought a knife to a gun fight and he won because he had some luck on his side h:
