I see your point Kestrel, I just disagree...
In law enforcement practices and statistics, if someone has a knife within 7 feet of you, it's been shown that they can stab you before you can shoot them. So the "reach" is far closer than expected.
Nonetheless, I just disagree with your choice of "choosing a fight," but to each their own... it works for many, and doesn't for many.
In the end if it's your time, it's your time, nothing but God is going to stop it...

Kudos to him. They're lucky he wasn't carrying a gun.
You better believe if someone busts into my home or threatens me or my family, they're getting a few new holes in their body.
I'm so glad I live in the south.

Do you think on average people can win in a situation like that? The Marine won because he got lucky that the second firearm malfunctioned. He could've just as easily been shot, and then the headlines would be very different.
Why am I giving them the wallet and hoping for the best? Because I'm choosing my fights, and trying to avoid those I am unlikely to win. Giving them the wallet != don't fight. It means that you're doing what you can to defuse the situation because it is greatly stacked against you, but being prepared to fight if it becomes necessary.

That's what the bastards get. You don't sleep or under estimate anyone, and this is a prime example of why. I got hit in the head with a beer bottle in a club one night, and turned around to find the perpetrator. Upon asking this guy, about 6'2" he immediately chose to throw a punch for which he paid for with a broken nose. I'm only 5'8", not a big guy but I am pretty active w/ self defense and martial arts. Oh well, those guys got what was coming, unfortunately a life was taken...but that's the consequence you pay for underestimating someone.
Normally when I go out I bring my Glock with just in case. Some say it's dumb, but whatever. I'll admit 99% of the time, nothing will happen, but there's always that 1%. You say over and over, it's not gonna happen to me(whatever the situation may be), I won't be a statistic. You let your gaurd down and something bad happens. Just my 2 cents.
