UMD's were the dumbest idea ever. at least no one said anything dumb like Blu-Ray is gonna fail too just because it's from sony. don't give me 'it's proprietary sony' nonsense. it has huge support from movie companies.

BUT...when a consumer (average joe dumbass) hears Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD which sounds more tempting to buy? A product with the familiar DVD name or Blu-Ray, something most people have never heard of, nor care about.

Why is anyone even considering BluRay or HDDVD when Holographic discs are already here. Sure they cost a lot, but if all these companies that are "backing" these 2 new useless dvd formats donated some money to R&D and manufactuing, it'd be down to dvd costs in no time.

In other words, why all this hub-uub about BluRay and HDDVD that max out at 30GB when we have holographic discs that start at 515GB and will soon be scaled up to much much more within 2 years?

That's HD-DVD maxing out that low. 30GB is a single layer of Blu-ray, and it looks to scale up to 200 without a real problem.

And for $15,000 for a holographic reader, and at $120 a disc, it will be a ways off before we need that.

And Blu-Ray is just as open as HD-DVD, if not moreso. I have no desire for a MS OS to be on my DVD player, and I prefer Sony's use of Java significantly.

200GB Isn't bad. But 515GB would be a lot better.

Sure the price is high now, but I think we need to just skip this BluRay HDDVD BS and get going with holographic.

The market isn't ready. In the consumer space, there isn't need beyond 60GB for video, really, and the consumer space is what drives the market. I agree holographic is, in the end, the way to go, but it wont hit a pricepoint that could be consumer purchasable for quite a while, and there's no read need for that much data in the home space yet. It's like saying everyone should own an NSX because they're pretty much better in every way over a civic, but for 99.999% of the population, the NSX is too pricey and the civic serves them just fine.

Well that settles it then. I'm going to get an NSX. h:

I guess one could say that I like to see what would be better overall, as opposed to the "lets get something on the market to bridge the gap and hold them over" type product.

I'd rock the NSX too h:

But, by the time holographic discs are ready, who knows where technology will go?

But, by your same logic is why I hold HD-DVD in disdain. It's got slower transfer rates, much lower capacity, and both in the name of hitting to market and being cheaper first. Also... come on... HD-DVD players use a Windows derivative for the OS. No thank you.
