Default Sony's UMD Format's Death Rattle Begins

http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl.../03/30/1626239

Next Generation reports that Wal-mart is dumping the UMD format, because no one was buying movies with the media. Above and beyond that decision, the studios are unimpressed as well. From the article: "One unnamed president of a major studio is quoted as saying, 'No one's watching movies on PSP. It's a game player, period.' Universal Studios Home Entertainment has ceased UMD production. One exec told Reuters, 'Sales are near zilch. It's another Sony bomb.' Paramount is also considering its future with PSP's format. An exec said, 'We are on hiatus with UMD. Releasing titles on UMD is the exception rather than the rule. No one's even breaking even on them.'"
shocker.

its amazing that this didnt happen sooner. i know i bought one movie for my psp and its the last one i ever would. way to difficult to watch a movie on a screen so small especially when you cant even take the disc to a tv either, so you basically have to have two copies of every movie...

i agree with the UMD format's failure for movies. putting your own videos or DVDs on a memory stick >>>> buying UMD movies.

however, i strongly disagree with you about using the PSP for movies. i have no problems watching videos on the screen. it's like an IMAX compared to iPod videos. like i said above, just because people arent buying UMD movies doesnt mean people dont use the PSP for video.

well, yeah, i don't doubt the PSP >> iPod at playing vids. and i actually do think it's nice to have vid playback support. actually, what i really like about the PSP is the ability to put emulators on it and that kind of stuff. of course, sony keeps trying to put the brakes on that with ever firmware upgrade.

but anyway, sony pushing their useless proprietary formats onto everyone is what i have a real problem with. i don't mind if every single one of them fails.

It's because UMDs cost too much. If they were $5-10, the market would be RIPE. Unforunately, at $15 for a USED UMD, it's simply not worth it. People buy UMDs to suppliment movies they own, not as a replacement for a DVD.

i'm not sure i see how buying an inferior quality movie, that i already own, that only plays on my handheld gaming system, is supplementing it. h:

i honestly don't think it's because of the cost. hell, people are still paying $20 for DVDs, and $15 for CDs. i mean, i expected it to be a huge failure when i first read about it, and i don't even know what they go for.

it's just a terribly useless proprietary format. imo, that's why it's failing.

betamax, microMV, and even minidisc will always be remembered as failures. the memory stick is arguable. as a game format, i dont see what the big deal is over UMDs. what about the gameboy's cartridges?
