I had to take a workplace sensitivity class a few years ago due to new legal issues that may arise. One of the things mentioned in that class is that it makes no difference how the person saying it intended it, it is how the person hearing it receives it.

Basically this means any sexual innuendo, racially slurred comment etc. could be mosconstrued by anyone regardless of intent.
But my personal feeling is the problem is with the individual hearing it, not with the individual saying it. Lighten up. Of course, provided there's nothing intentionally insulting or extremely racist about it.

Didn't is past tense. How can you be sensitive about something your grandfather went through? My indian relatives didn't get put in chains, those dudes got shot man. They got shot or they received blankets with small pox in them. But why should I be angry or upset or sensitive to it today? Most people go out of their way to be extra courteous to minorities. But the same slim number of people that are racist bigot assholes are matched by the number of minorities who are the exact same way. I'm not a big fan of double standards.

OK let me break this down to simple english...

Your personal feelings don't mean shit nor does the way you said it or intended it. If the person hearing it takes offense they can cause problems for you by reporting it to your employer...if your employer does not take action and it happens again the person hearing it has a case for "hostile work environment" which can make for quite a large lawsuit. The company becomes responsible for it once it has been reported.

Again, regardless of how you said it or meant it doesn't mean jack shit.

This is one of the first things you learn when entering the proffesional workplace, especially when dealing in office type jobs.

who said grandfather?

I was called a chink in grade school ... then I found a group of asian people to bond with in high school.

people wonder how others only have friends of a certain race ... it's because the people inside those groups have the same common bonds and life experiences.

...I'm in a professional workplace right now. Do I say whatever I want? Of course not. I don't think I've ever said anything remotely racist or made any racial jokes. We have like 10 asians in my office out of 50-60 employees. But I think we should be able to live in a society where people can joke around and some moron who's having a bad day doesn't call his lawyer sue him for making a racially inflammatory comment. I obviously understand restrictions on speech, but only up to a point. I think it's horrible to call a black person the N word because of the history of that word, even though technically the word originated as a slur for any lazy person of any race. I think 'wetback' is horrible or 'gouk' or 'cracker' or any of those are pretty shitty for a person to use, but just joking around and trying to have fun is totally different.

:werd: Even if it were a joke, it's not funny. Like Drew said, replace what was said with the n bomb, I don't find humor in that.

white people? jews are white too right? Ask them what they went through. how about Armenians with their jenocide. Asians didn't go through anything. Don't put blacks and asians in same catagory. Btw, asians are not minority.
