good hip hop =

rap music as a whole would have a better reputation if it were associated with this stuff instead of lil john and young jeezy.

The perception of "good hip hop" to some people are the groups that didn't "sell out" to mainstream radio.

In reality, they didn't make it. I'm not saying groups that don't sell cds aren't good ... but don't forget, groups that do sell ass loads of cds don't suck either.

I'm not a B.E.P. fan, but any one of the groups you listed above would do anything to be in their shoes.

Hip-Hop is now dead to me. I used to be able to listed to it, but with some of the songs today, I can't deal with it any more.

i like all of those groups, but there are still a lot of mainstream groups / artists that i like. i dont think hip hop would have better reputation if those groups you listed, a lot of people would not see the difference between that and mainstream

edit: hell, i bet a lot of people would not like it at all

Mainstream is for the masses. If the masses want to hear songs about bitches, blunts and rims, that is what will be played. If the masses wanted to hear poetic hip hop lyrics then that is what would be popular. I just listen to what sounds good to me.

Well the mainstream is also dictated by the record industry. They force play certain types of music and certain artists to the radio stations...you say yeah but they could just play something else. Well not if the industry as a whole is moving the listening and buying public in a new direction, then they only release one type of music until after a while it becomes the norm and accepted.

What is popular is not always bad and not always good either, but it is generally what is sold to you by the industry and not always dictated by your personal taste.

Gang Starr opened up for Rage Against the Machine back in like '99, I thought they were absolutely terrible. So did the rest of the crowd.

Then again, I don't go for much hip-hop, and I'm not sure why Rage chose Gang Starr as an opener since their styles are so different.
