Well the mainstream is also dictated by the record industry. They force play certain types of music and certain artists to the radio stations...you say yeah but they could just play something else. Well not if the industry as a whole is moving the listening and buying public in a new direction, then they only release one type of music until after a while it becomes the norm and accepted.
What is popular is not always bad and not always good either, but it is generally what is sold to you by the industry and not always dictated by your personal taste.
