Since you think it is so ok then why would you even have to worry about who hears it? Would you say it in a mixed crowd of people? If I walked up and said something like, "What up my chink" would that be ok? How about, what up my honky"? Since we are tossing around racial inflectives why not insert kike, gook, wop or any other racial term that can be thought of?

Why just limit the phrase to one race if it isn't meant as an insult and is nothing more than a word replacing "dude". I mean shit I could think of a couple hundred things to put in there instead.

Lets figure this out then...

I have a large spectrum of friends growing up in Canada, and now again in Florida. I'd say only a handful of Asian doods though, so maybe I am wrong here... but I have never heard two Asians say "What up chinky" or "slant eye" or "gook" or any other racial epithet. I have ALOT of Hispanic friends here living in Florida and also back in Montreal, but I never hear them going around saying, "What up beaner", ( Icant think of any others)... but thats the point. Nor do me and my white friends say shit like "Sup cracker" or "whats happening honkey"...

But for some reason... black people go around saying ***** like its part of their diet. If it's such an offensive term, why are they saying it? N!gger I understand... no one says "Whats up n!gger!". Its a common everyday term now to say n!gga with the "A"... and its made to be a comfortable term.

Understand the point I am trying to get across?

There are actually plenty of people alive today who were responsible for many of the racially motivated injustices "so long ago". In fact especially lately, because it's February, I think I've seen at least a couple shows talking about wanting to use newer techniques or discoveries to retry suspects from those times. Even then, there are many people responsible for events now and not that long ago who are still causing problems.

Just for kicks, I have a couple white coworkers who call each other "cracker". No one else calls them that, rightfully so. They just call each other that because they're friends and they feel close enough to "joke around" in that way. I'm not saying it's right but basically, because they're white, they can do it. If a non-white coworker said that, I know for a fact that one of them would have a problem with it.

Have you ever been in another country or area with a completely different culture and seen another person like you and felt like you could connect with them more easily? Or have you ever been fat or had some kind of issue and talked to someone with the same condition and felt like you knew where they were coming from and vice versa?

And once again, that teacher should have simply known better.

Why would you feel offended if someone said cracker to you? I know nobody that would be offended if any person called them that. Where did it come from? Cracker and any form of the n word cannot be compared really. I have been raised that the n word is a really bad word. I feel bad saying it in a quote or a song or anything of the sort.

Why can't anyone else call black people the n word, but everyone and their great auntie bertha can call white people cracker?

crack·er (krăk'ər)
n.
  1. A thin crisp wafer or biscuit, usually made of unsweetened dough.
  2. One that cracks, especially:
    1. A firecracker.
    2. A small cardboard cylinder covered with decorative paper that holds candy or a party favor and pops when a paper strip is pulled at one or both ends and torn.
    3. The apparatus used in the cracking of petroleum.
    4. One who makes unauthorized use of a computer, especially to tamper with data or programs.
  3. Offensive.
    1. Used as a disparaging term for a poor white person of the rural, especially southeast United States.
    2. Used as a disparaging term for a white person.

If you're white and you find the word cracker offensive, tell me why. I'm interested in hearing your reasons.

Actually I was just showing that non-blacks also toss around racial slurs affectionately. I agree that cracker and the n word can't really be compared simply because of the histories associated with each term.

As for where it came from, if you trust wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_cracker

And I don't believe everyone and their great auntie bertha can call white people cracker.

But they do and nobody says anything because not many people find it offensive.

So since people called slaves the n word, nobody can ever say potato around me since I'm part Irish and I find potato offensive.

Have the Irish in America had a rough time with race relations in US history? Did anyone call you potato to offend you or make you feel like less of a person? If so, what was the situation?

I think the key to the potential difference in situations is simply history. When an older white teacher tells a young black student to "get away from the door and sit down *****h!", who knows what goes through that student's mind. Reminders of slavery, lynchings, and/or simply being looked down on as being inferior aren't that hard to imagine.

As for people calling others the same thing (blacks calling blacks *****s, Irish calling Irish potatoes, or fat people calling fat people fat), a lot of it has to do with feeling a shared identity.
