I think the key to the potential difference in situations is simply history. When an older white teacher tells a young black student to "get away from the door and sit down *****h!", who knows what goes through that student's mind. Reminders of slavery, lynchings, and/or simply being looked down on as being inferior aren't that hard to imagine.

As for people calling others the same thing (blacks calling blacks *****s, Irish calling Irish potatoes, or fat people calling fat people fat), a lot of it has to do with feeling a shared identity.

I'll accept ypur argument and opinion, even though I dont agree.

I still think that the people using the term werent around when slavery was abolished and all that... even if there are people who suffered the after effects.

My point i that it IS a very derogatory term, but it has been so mainstreamd by the people who find it offensive that its lost its shock value. If its been so accepted for one group to say it, then there shouldnt be a hold on other people being able to.

Just to add, I can say I pretty much never say the word unless on HAN trying to make a point about this crap, and I sometimes feel uncomfortable saying it myself. But I do think that if one group can throw it around, then anyone should have the right to say it without being looked at as a rasicst.

I would love to see what you think of it... altho frustration would probably come out of it...

And i think they should ban it from shcool in general, if they dont want teachers to use this kind of language then they should also ban the students from using it... Man in my high school I wasnt allowed to say fuck infront of the teachers, which is normal!!! sign of respect! if in fact the student did call the teacher a N!gga, then the teacher should of given him some sort disiplinary actions "maybe a 2000 word essay on the actual word"... my opinion.

Oh and to the guy whos said "You know all these african americans(not the ones whos earning a decent living, i respect them) coming up with ways to milk america of their money, having 5 or 6 kids to get a fat welfare check needs to have a reality check"m that is a racist comment, lots of other races are on welfare and tries to "screw"the system.

Am I the only one that thinks the kid is out of line for wanting an honors English teacher, who has had a career for 20 years teaching, lose his job because he said a word this is synonomous with a greeting?

Double standard ftl, the kid needs to get punched in the face and stop being such a little bitch. If the teacher loses his job, do you know how much crap the kids in that school are going to get away with since teachers will be reluctant to be bold and discipline them? Racism is absolutely not the issue here, and people who believe so are ignorant.

Ok, the teacher was suspended for 10 days and loss of pay. Let it go and stop being such a butthurt little bitch. If someone calls you a name and you let it ruin life than it should be your problem. What I took from both sides of the story is that it wasn't even intented to be an insult or "name calling" but rather a retaliation for the student saying that word to the teacher originally. Ok, the student can say it, but the teacher? wtfomgbbq, what a racist!!!!!

The student said that he didnt use the word, and has his classmates to back that up.

I dont think the teacher should lose his job...the suspension should have did it IMO. Hopefully he would know better than to use that word in the classroom again :hs:

But in that case, just because a student does one thing doesnt mean the teacher should be allowed to. I mean they arent exactly peers in the classroom.

I use to say N!gga all the time around black ppl I didn't know, the way I used it noone ever gave me looks :dunno: I had black friends that used it to me and vice versa no harm done. I've said it to black ppl before and nobody said anything or tried to punch me in the mouth. Maybe it's the way I say it, maybe it's the way I use it and don't hesitate. I don't use it much anymore since HS but there are my ghetto flashback moments where I relapse and it comes out. I'm not black, I wasn't a slave, hell I'm portuguese(portuguese started the slave trade, I don't have or want a slave) I just don't understand how a word can get ppl's panties in a twist. The only reason the word holds power is becuz ppl give it the power. If some racist white person calls a black person a nigg3r he's trying to get the guy pissed off, by getting pissed off your fueling the fire and causing them to do it more cuz they know it bothers you. It follows some of the same guidelines as bullying.

I'm sorry slavery happened, but I'm not about to pussyfoot around because everyone nowadays gets soo easily offended. What happened to that phrase sticks and stones?

It's a sore subject and I don't really care, don't like me cuz of the way I think, fine by me...I'm like cavier not for all tastes hfawk:

In all honesty, if the kid said "can a n!gga get a pencil?" to the teacher and he replied "can a n!gga sit down" I'd give the teacher an award for showing the kid the same disrespect back. The kid doesn't like to be called a n!gga, maybe the teacher doesn't either...I saw it wayy too often in HS. Life lesson, learn it or get ready for a harsh reality.

first off : This post might piss a couple people of but it is my view

I personally feel that history should not even play a part in this argument , if everybody kept a grudge about what already happend then we would be in a permanent war against each other. sure none of what happend was right but shit, it happend .

Every person in the world has a prejudise about something, about a diff race, country, group of people ,car type, even something as small as color of hair.If we all want to be equal , why is it not okay for me to say "*****" but it is for the other person? Why if some person gets locked up for drugs, they start complaining about people being racist, its the easiest way to get out of something because no1 wants to be a racist.Sure there are ppl who are unfair and are racist those ppl should be punished in their own way

The teacher should not have said what he did but it is not neccesary for him to take it this far. If i got on TV everytime some1 said something to me that "had something to do with my history" then i would be on there 24/7

btw Black ppl are still so pissed about slavery and how badly they were treated, sure its not right but have any of them thought about the fact that if there was never slavery, they would probably be starving somewhere in africa right now.(Not being racist in any way but i was thinking about it). i would just be glad that it was not me and make as much of my life as possible.Would you be pissed at the world because your finger was amputated? NO, because the whole world didnt do it.

anyways

I do have to say that I am not racist in any way and that i believe my views are open minded and not focused through one racial group.

We share similar views.

Maybe we should just go back to the time when teachers could slap the shit outta you when you were a smart ass or disrespectful in class. Kids need that shit these days, a good slap didnt hurt me and I bet I am alot better off for it. I am not going to be afraid to disipline my children when I have them.

Not beat them, but enforce right and wrong in certain situations. You can almost certainly see the difference today in kids who have discipline, and those whose parents are pussyfoot hippies...
