Default Broadband Advice

So my mom needs to enter the world of broadband (finally). She wants to get rid of AOL dial-up which has been a tedious task to say the least. Between AOL and a second phone line, she is paying approximately $50/month and would like to keep the price around there, with some flexibility. Here is some background:

- She has Dish Network and has absolutely no desire to switch to Comcast cable.
- She cannot get Verizon because she is too far from the CO (I believe that this is due to her living in a 40 year old neighborhood that has not been updated)
- Speed is not the largest of factors as anything is faster than what she has now.

The two options I have found so far are:
- Comcast, $58/month + $3.00 modem rental
- Speakeasy One Point ($56, 1.5mps/384)

Any comments on the two choices? Does anyone have any other ideas? All help is appreciated.

From what I've heard, Comcast blows monkeys.

No literally, they do. They aren't allowed at the zoo anymore...

have you looked into Yahoo DSL? They're only $15 a month and the speed is MUCH better than what you have.

Also, Comcast often runs new subscriber specials. I've seen deals for $19.99 for your first year. Just mention the Yahoo DSL $15 a month deal when talking to the Comcast rep, they'll start fixing that price quickly.

the west coasters will preach against comcast.. but in all honesty other than in cali i'd trust comcast over that other company

and to tell you the truth i am sick of cable company's "renting" people hardware... people have to pay 70¢ a month to rent a remote control that costs them 3 bucks?

I've had a few incidents this year ... but nothing to bitch and moan about. I'm actually quite pleased with my Comcast service.

I have Comcast in the San Jose, CA area.

Fast... WHEN IT WORKS.

Every few minutes, it loses connection for about 10-30 seconds. Which means downloads usually break, there's no way to maintain any regularly connection (like a VPN or net game). F^&*ing name server doesn't seem to respond and then suddenly works again for no reason. It's not my wireless because I ALWAYS can access my administrator menu for the router wirelessly. Ping seems to work more reliably.

I'm getting so sick of this that I'm looking into Y!DSL... I don't care if it's slower... maintaining constant connection is more important to me.

sbc ftw, but dont install their browser and everything, once u get ur sbc account and pw, just make a connection with windows then bypass all of the sbc spam and unesesary crap otherwise the internet is good, not the fastest, but its good non the less
